Why We Vote

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The Preamble to the United States Constitution explains who (the People) is doing what (establishing a form of government), and why this is necessary (in Order to . . .).

The current president of the United States and his MAGA minions are acting in opposition to every objective listed in the Preamble.

They seek to divide the population and exclude whole segments of it from the protections guaranteed by the Constitution.
The President uses the Department of Justice as his personal law firm; abuses the pardon privilege; attempts to circumvent the justice system in any way he can; and denies due process to anyone he deems unworthy.
He sends federal agents into our cities to arrest immigrants and quell nonviolent protests.
He calls the Department of Defense the Department of War, started a war he now cannot win or end, and unlawfully bombs boats off the coast of South America.
Republicans in Congress have cut budgets and staff for agencies that serve people who are most in need, while allowing their cult leader to divert or withhold congressionally-appropriated funds for his own political purposes.
The president and MAGA Republicans seem to believe that only select members of their families and friends are entitled to the blessings of liberty; that is, they are free to secure whatever financial blessings they can through the offices they hold.

The original version of the Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. In the 239 years since, it has been revised and amended so that “We the People” now means all the people, and so that specific rights and protections are guaranteed to us.

We the people are the government. We govern through representatives we elect to serve our best interests. Our elected representatives, and their appointees, take an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” and to “bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” We the people hold the ultimate authority for oversight of our representatives. If any of them violate their oath or use their position to serve themselves rather than us, we trust that their colleagues will hold them to account on our behalf.

We the people also have a duty to support and defend the Constitution. We fulfill our duty by exercising our right to vote. The current administration is trying, by any means possible, to deprive some people of this right. They want to disenfranchise voters they believe will vote against the MAGA party. If we want to preserve our rights, if we want to protect our Constitution and defend it against threats such as those it now faces, we must vote for representatives who will honor not only their oath, but their constituents as well—all of them.

The right to vote is a true Blessing of Liberty, and it’s one you can enjoy again and again. Cherish it. Use it. Vote.
